Evelynne is just two years old, but her journey has already been a testament to incredible strength and resilience. Born prematurely at 32 weeks via C-section, Evelynne faced life’s toughest battles from her very first breath. On the day she was born, she stopped breathing and needed to be intubated immediately.
The following day, her family received a devastating diagnosis: Evelynne has Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a rare condition that causes fragile bones. At that time, the doctors couldn’t determine exactly which type she had. What they did know was heartbreaking: 80% of her bones were fractured or in the process of healing at the time of birth. Evelynne and her family spent two long months in the NICU at UNM Children’s Hospital, fighting for her life.
“Those first two months of Evelynne’s life were filled with uncertainty and fear, as we almost lost her more than once” said Evelynne’s Mother Courtney. The doctors’ outlook was grim, with less than a year expected. After surviving those critical months, Evelynne was sent home with a diagnosis of Type 2 Osteogenesis Imperfecta. She was placed on hospice; with the hope she could spend her final days surrounded by family in Bernalillo.
But Evelynne, she had other plans.
Defying every expectation, Evelynne fought on living past her devastating prognosis. After more time and further evaluation, her diagnosis was more promising: Type 3 Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Although Type 3 is still challenging and carries a short life expectancy, Evelynne continues to fight and Courtney refuses to let her OI define her daughter.
Today, Evelynne is a spirited, lively two-year-old who lights up every room she enters. She is surrounded by a family who loves her fiercely and fights alongside her every day to give her the best life possible. Her journey is far from over, and every moment with her is a precious reminder of hope and courage.
“When I look at a new challenge, I’m always reminded that what I’m afraid of has nothing on what Evie goes through. She inspires me and her dad to be more courageous every day.”
