A Message from the Director

“The power of compounding investment…sustained investment in talent over time.”

As the Presidential Scholarship Program marks its 50th anniversary, this is a natural moment to celebrate. But more importantly, it is a moment to take stock - to reflect on what has been built, where the program stands today, and what the future can become.

For five decades, PSP has been one of the University of New Mexico’s most enduring investments in student talent. Since 1976, more than 5,000 Scholars from every corner of New Mexico have come to UNM through this program. They have pursued degrees across every discipline and gone on to leadership in medicine, research, education, business, engineering, the arts, and public service.

At its core, the Presidential Scholarship has always been a New Mexico story: New Mexico students, supported by New Mexicans, building futures here at home.
Over the years, the question has evolved. It is no longer simply whether we can identify exceptional talent. We can. We have. We do. The real question is what happens after that talent arrives at UNM.

In my years working with these students, one lesson has become clear: undergraduate success is essential, but it is not the end of the story. The transition into graduate school, professional training, or advanced research is often where financial pressures intensify and where first-generation and underrepresented students face their greatest barriers.
That realization led to an important evolution in how we think about the Presidential Scholarship Program…not simply as a four-year scholarship, but as a continuum of opportunity.

The Presidential Scholar Graduate Award grew directly out of that insight. It extends the investment that begins at the undergraduate level and allows highly promising students to continue forward when the stakes are highest. Our first Graduate Award Scholar is now pursuing a PhD in biomedical sciences at UNM, building on the foundation that began with the Presidential Scholarship and moving into research with the potential to change lives.

That is the power of compounding investment - not disconnected opportunities, but sustained investment in talent over time.

In its third year of fundraising, the Graduate Award has been embraced as a natural evolution and is positioned as a pillar initiative aligned with the Foundation’s long-term campaign priorities — supporting trajectories rather than moments in time.

What has always made this program distinctive, however, is not only financial support. It is the community that surrounds it. Over the decades, the Presidential Scholarship Program has become a living ecosystem: donors who remain deeply connected, Scholars who mentor one another, alumni who return to give back, and a network that continues to strengthen itself across generations.

Importantly, many of these Scholars choose to stay, build, and lead right here in New Mexico, reinforcing the simple idea that when a community invests in its own students, those students help build the future of the state.

Terry Mulert, pictured with Presidential Scholars, has led the Presidential Scholarship Program since 2018 and has worked with New Mexico students for nearly four decades.

The 50th anniversary of the Presidential Scholarship Program represents not only longevity, but continuity…not just a history of success, but a platform for what comes next.
For me personally, having lived and worked in New Mexico for nearly four decades, the opportunity to work with these students has been deeply meaningful. Each year they remind us how extraordinary young people can be when a university and a community choose to invest in them.

The Presidential Scholarship Program began with a belief in the promise of New Mexico’s students. Fifty years later, that belief continues to shape the future of the University of New Mexico and the future of the state we serve.
Thank you for your belief and support.

UNM Presidential Scholarship 50th Anniversary Video Series - Brian Jones and Kevin Stevenson

Many of New Mexico’s highest achieving and most committed high school graduates attend UNM each year thanks to their Presidential Scholarship.

These scholars earned the right to be called Presidential Scholars through their academic performance and community service. They enrich New Mexico and exemplify student success as Lobos on the UNM campus throughout their college careers and long after they graduate. With an annual gift of $3,200, you will create your very own named Presidential Scholarship. This award is currently valued at over $6,000 annually with the help of our leveraged funds, and it covers a Scholar’s tuition, fees, books and more. As a Sponsor, you are matched with a Presidential Scholar, attend special invitation-only events, and have an opportunity to make a personal connection with the student whose life you are helping to change. Alternately, you may make a gift of any size to the UNM Presidential Scholarship Program and “Share a Scholar” with other generous donors. These gifts make a difference by providing many additional Presidential Scholarships. For giving in perpetuity, an investment of $75,000 or more establishes an endowed Presidential Scholarship, which can bear the donor’s name, or the name of a living or deceased loved one, colleague, or mentor. You may create an endowment with a onetime gift or pay over three years or less.

PSP Graduate Award Enters 4th Year of Fundraising

The Presidential Scholarship program changes lives and embodies the best of New Mexico for Lobos, providing Scholars the ability to focus on their educational careers with significantly less financial burden. We knew it was time for us to do more! That's why a few forward-thinking donors stepped forward to help launch the first of its kind Presidential Scholar Graduate Award. This scholarship helps recruit and retain Presidential Scholars after they graduate with a bachelor's degree and provide much needed financial assistance to attend UNM graduate school. Your support will keep Presidential Scholars at UNM through our graduate scholarship. With a gift, you provide the assistance a student needs to pursue their next step towards success, which is otherwise not possible for some.
